Figure 2. Avalanches can easily destroy an entire forest. These spruce trees in the Mettlenruns region of Switzerland were knocked flat by a powder cloud in February 1999. Trees can help to stabilize the snow on a steep slope but they do not slow down a flowing avalanche.
