The observatory


The Pierre Auger Observatory is located in the Pampa Amarilla, an area 600 miles west of Buenos Aires, near the town of Malargüe. When complete, 1600 surface detectors, spaced 1.5 kilometres apart will cover an area 3000 kilometres squared (photo credit: Pierre Auger collaboration).
