The image shows the radio source (depicted by the contours), superposed on an optical (Very Large Telescope) O++ image. The optical image shows the old nebula which was ejected a few thousand years ago. The radio image shows in addition a central source which has no counterpart in O++: this is the new ejecta, or newly ionised gas surrounding the star (image credit: A Zijlstra).
