A schematic of a phase-sensitive near-field scanning optical microscope experiment on a photonic crystal waveguide. The field of a pulse travelling inside the photonic structure is picked up by a coated fibre probe with a sub-wavelength aperture (shown in the inset). At each position the signal detected by the probe is interferometrically mixed with part of the same pulse that has propagated through the sample giving access to the local field amplitude and phase (image credit: L Kuipers)
