The primordial Universe: This image of the temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background covers approximately 1800 square degrees of the southern sky. It was taken using the Boomerang telescope over a ten-day period in December 1998 and January 1999. For scale, the apparent size of the moon is shown at the bottom of the picture.
