Gas-giant chaos

The motion of the gas giants (such as Jupiter, pictured above) could be either regular or chaotic. If it is the latter then there is no chance astronomers will be able to forecast the planets' future orbits. But now US physicist Wayne Hayes claims that it is impossible to show whether the gas giants' orbits are chaotic given the current accuracy of our observations. (Credit: NASA-MSFC)
