Spins on the edge
The quantum spin Hall effect: Electrons at the edges of a very thin insulator are able to conduct electricity. If the electrons are moving out of the page, spin down electrons (red) move along the left edge, while spin up electrons (blue) move along the right edge. (Courtesy: Laurens Molenkamp)
