The Battle of Anghiari
No one knows what The Battle of Anghiari — which was painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505 — actually looks like because it is buried under several other frescos at the Palazzo Vecchio town hall in Florence. This copy, painted by Peter Paul Rubens nearly a century later, is thought to capture the essence of the original.
