Infrared glow

NASA/Space Telescope Science Institute - The three photos above are made from composite data produced by COBE between December 1989 and September 1990.

The top image is a montage of the sky at ten infrared wavelengths. The middle band in the center is the Milky Way Galaxy. The red colour notes intersteller dust clouds. The blue colour indicates inplanetary dust.

The middle image has had the inplanetary dust removed.

The last image shows the sky with both the solor system and galaxy light removed. A uniform background glow can be seen across the image.
