Type-Ib supernova in 'real time'
Alicia Soderberg and Edo Berger were routinely monitoring the aftermath of supernova SN 2007uy using X-ray data (left) from NASA’s Swift satellite when by chance they caught another star in the act of turning into a supernova. A few days later they could see the new supernova, called SN 2008D, in visible light (right). (Credit: NASA/Swift Science Team/Stefan Immler)
