Random-packing phase diagram

Makse and co-workers have produced a phase diagram that describes the role of friction in random packing. For a given friction (except zero) there is a range of possible packing fractions, as illustrated by the dashed line. The final packing fraction is determined by the manner with which the spheres are allowed to settle. (Credit: Nature)
