Cultural and temporal invariance

Frequency-rank plots derived from the four cookery books. The variable r is the rank of a specific ingredient and f(r) is the relative number of recipes that use the ingredient with rank r. The top graph shows f(r) for four different books. The bottom graph shows f(r) for three different editions of Dona Benta from 1946, 1969 and 2004.
