Last year two teams of astronomers reported tentative evidence that the universe is accelerating, rather than slowing down as predicted by most theories. The evidence was based on observations of distant supernovae and favoured a non-zero value of the cosmological constant - the number that Einstein once famously called his biggest blunder.
