5 Getting better all the time
The accuracy of caesium microwave atomic clocks has increased by more than five orders of magnitude over the past 50 years (blue circles). The best caesium-fountain clocks are accurate to better than one part in 1015 and are used as primary frequency standards. However, optical clocks (green circles) are now almost as accurate as the caesium fountain, and should be even more reproducible within a few years.
