Development in numbers

One measure of the growing disparity between the developed and developing world is the speed of the Internet, with speeds in Africa, for example, being slower than North America by a factor of 50. The data are determined by measuring the time it takes for a digital pulse sent over the Internet to return to the sender. The results were obtained by a collaboration between ICTP scientists and those at the PingER project at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
