3 Tracing meteorites


A meteorite that exploded 30 km above the Pacific ocean in 2001 produced a highly coherent infrasonic signal that was picked up by six of the eight elements at the infrasonic array in California (one of which is shown). Although the source was instantaneous, the signal lasted for several minutes because the sound waves had travelled along different paths through the stratosphere and thermosphere.
