Scientific wealth in nations

Most countries have rich and poor regions. In the UK, for instance, London and the south-east is the most wealthy region. Moreover, the southern half of the UK - and the "golden triangle" of London, Oxford and Cambridge in particular - seems to benefit most from the public funding of science and research. However, recent major investments in physics in Scotland and Northern Ireland - and the possibility of a new accelerator centre in the north of England - are good news for the physics community throughout the UK.
