Although the first attempt by the US to put an artificial satellite into orbit failed spectacularly when the Vanguard rocket it was mounted on exploded shortly after launch, that disaster paved the way for the successful launch on 31 January 1958 of Explorer 1 using the Juno-1 rocket (shown) designed by ex-Nazi Werner Von Braun.
