Figure 3: Photonic quasicrystals

(a) The holes in this quasiperiodic photonic crystal are arranged in a
pattern with 12-fold symmetry, which means that light from any direction will
experience the photonic band gap. (b) On close inspection, the
arrangement looks random. (c) This particular lattice is based on an
arrangement of squares and triangles. The pattern is then shrunk, rotated and
repositioned at each of the corner points (blue lines). This recursive process
is repeated a few times to cover a wide area.
