Probing decoherence

The experimental set-up used at the ENS in Paris to probe decoherence in quantum superpositions of mesoscopic electromagnetic fields. The superpositions are produced and probed by atom-cavity interactions. The decoherence is caused by cavity losses. The cavity is formed by two superconducting mirrors at the centre of the apparatus. One of the mirrors has been removed in this photograph.
