Conference

International Workshop on "Hamiltonian Approaches of ITER Physics"

International Workshop on "Hamiltonian Approaches of ITER Physics"

which is to be held in the CIRM (Centre International de Rencontres
Mathematiques), Marseille, France, from 2 to 6 November 2009.

The main objective of this workshop is to bring together
mathematicians and physicists with different background (including
numerical analysis, scientific computing, differential geometry, PDEs,
multiscale analysis, physics of plasmas and fluids, kinetic theory,
Hamiltonian mechanics, turbulence, transport,...) to discuss the state
of the art of modeling, theoretical and computational ITER physics in
particular via an Hamiltonian approach.

Being a very challenging project, the success of ITER
(http://www.iter.org) will depend on a thorough understanding of
various complex processes, often coupling the dynamics on a large
range of spatio-temporal scales and involving different types of
physics. Their description calls for the use of advanced mathematics
and numerics which will be discussed at this meeting. The aim here is
to open new directions by exploiting synergies between several
neighboring disciplines. A special emphasis will be put on the
Hamiltonian methods for these problems: perturbation theory, Poisson
algebras, symplectic integrators,...

The list of participants and speakers includes:

Alain Brizard (Colchester, Vermont, USA)
Xavier Garbet (Cadarache, France) *
Philippe Ghendrih (Cadarache, France)
Alain Ghizzo (Nancy, France) *
Frank Jenko (Garching, Germany) *
Roberto Livi (Florence, Italy)
Robert MacKay (Warwick, UK)
Phil Morrison (Austin, Texas, USA)
Tudor Ratiu (Lausanne, Switzerland)
Stefano Ruffo (Florence, Italy)
Yannick Sarrazin (Cadarache, France) *
Karl-Heinz Spatschek (Duesseldorf, Germany)
Alexei Vasiliev (Moscow, Russia)
Rui Vilela Mendes (Lisbon, Portugal)

(speakers marked with * are not confirmed)

This workshop will take place in the framework of the thematic
trimester "MATH & ITER" at CIRM (Centre International de Rencontres
Mathematiques) from 31 August through 11 December 2009. CIRM is
located in a very beautiful area just above the famous Calanques of
Marseille, on the Mediterranean sea coast.
