The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) - Study Photonics Open Day on 26th March 2014

The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) is looking for the photonics pioneers of the future to join our vibrant research team and work alongside our world-class researchers.

Photonics challenges perceptions and expands possibilities in industries as diverse as; communications, healthcare, renewable-energy, transport, defence, manufacturing, and the environment. If you are looking for a rewarding career in a technology sector enjoying unprecedented growth1, then join the ORC and be at the forefront of the photonics revolution.

The ORC’s strong links with industry, and many of world’s top universities, open opportunities to develop and capitalise solutions to real-world problems. Our drive to innovate and exploit our research means:

  • There are as many special fibre drawing plants in Southampton now as in the whole of the USA.
  • Over 700 of our enterprising alumni are in key positions all over the world – some of them millionaires.
  • More than 10 companies in the Southampton area owe their origins to the ORC.
  • Our researchers publish over 200 journal papers per year and enjoy tremendous academic success.

Join the ORC and you’ll be working in research labs and gaining exposure to fabrication facilities with which few universities can compete. Our Masters programme in photonic technologies lasts one year, with taught modules including; lasers, microfabrication, metamaterials and nanophotonics; practical training in research techniques and modelling; and concludes with a four month project.

Our PhD programme offers a wealth of research opportunities in over 30 different research groups covering a multitude of disciplines, many of them multi-disciplinary.
