Turnkey 18kV, 20A Power System Mar 24, 2009

TDK-Lambda’s High Voltage ALE division has successfully delivered a Turnkey, compact, high performance power system to a major US research facility.

The system is rated to deliver 18kV and 20A at a maximum average power of 300kW, and will be used to drive a high power RF oscillator in a Research Accelerator.

The power rack employs a Master Controller connected to six ALE 303S series DC power modules, with their outputs combined in a parallel junction box/filter. The entire power system is housed in a standard 35U high (1.5m/61”) dual bay 19” rack, and incorporates all control and high voltage interconnects, and cooling water manifolds.

Raw high voltage DC power is provided by the six parallel connected 303S power modules each capable of delivering 18kV and 3.3A at a power limit of 50kW. The Master Controller employs a proven multi phase variable frequency technique, and offers comprehensive local and remote control and monitoring. Multi-phase control allows the system to deliver ultra low output voltage ripple, combined with a small output capacitance, and low stored energy, thereby eliminating the need for complex and costly crowbar type load protection schemes which are normally required. The multi-phase control approach combined with the 303S power modules, makes for a highly scalable system design which can easily accommodate additional modules for increased output power requirements with no practical limitation other than size and budget.

Typical System Operating Parameters:

  • Output Voltage: 0-18kV
  • Output Current: 0-20A with 300kW power limit
  • Ripple: 0.1% p-p with less than 50J stored energy (0.01% optional)
  • Power Factor: >0.92 at full power and nominal 480VAC input
  • Efficiency: >88% at full power and nominal 480VAC input
  • Fast load ARC shutdown, short and open circuit protection, water-cooling, full remote and local control with current and voltage programming, local overvoltage and overcurrent setting.
