RoHS Compliant Photo IC for Ambient Light Monitoring Apr 23, 2009

Hamamatsu Photonics introduce a new light to frequency output Photo IC, aimed primarily to replace traditional CdS photoconductive cells.

They have been used for many years in light sensor products, but are now not compliant with new EU RoHS regulations. The new RoHS compliant S9705 device consists of a photodiode, which is combined with a current to frequency conversion circuit fabricated using Hamamatsu “in house” CMOS process. The output from the S9705 is a square wave, with frequency between pulses directly proportional to the incident light intensity. This makes it very easy to measure light by “counting” the pulses using a digital counter. The S9705 has low noise and a wide dynamic range in excess of 100,000 and when combined with its high linearity, makes this device suitable for a wide range of light measurement applications. Applications include brightness sensors for televisions and monitors and many more.
