New director for US neutron source

05 Mar 1999

David Moncton is to become director of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) project at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US. The SNS will be a $1.3bn accelerator-based neutron source and is due to come on-line in 2005. Moncton is currently the associate director responsible for the Advanced Photon Source at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. Moncton's team completed the APS, one of the world's first third-generation synchrotron radiation sources, on schedule and under budget. The SNS is designed to help the US regain world leadership in neutron scattering from Europe, which is currently home to the world's leading sources.
