Physics World Special Report: Brazil 2014

With Brazil hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup – and staging the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in two years’ time – the eyes of the world are focused on a country that is now a leading player on the global stage. While there have been criticisms of the huge sums of money spent on these sporting events, the government has also invested heavily in science, with spending on research more than quadrupling since the turn of the century. This special report examines some of the challenges and opportunities for Brazilian physics, and includes an exclusive interview with the country’s science minister Marco Antonio Raupp, who is a physicist by training.
