Milky Way’s central black hole located

22 Sep 2000

Astronomers have pinpointed the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way with more accuracy than ever before. Andrea Ghez and co-workers at the University of California at Los Angeles observed three stars orbiting the radio source known as Sagittarius A*. Astronomers have long suspected that Sagittarius A* is the black hole at the centre of our galaxy, and the new measurements are the strongest evidence yet to support the theory (A M Ghez et al 2000 Nature 407 349).

Ghez and colleagues collected infrared images of the nucleus of the Milky Way over a four-year per
