Condensed matter escapes the lab

Surface science and quantum mechanics can provide valuable insights into conditions in the Earth’s core, as two teams of physicists explained this week at the Institute of Physics Congress, held in Brighton, UK. A group from the University of Nottingham described how their experiments with icy surfaces could shed light on the early stages of star formation. Meanwhile, physicists from University College London explained how they estimated the composition and temperature of the Earth’s core from a knowledge of the properties of certain elements.
