Einstein to star in global webcast

30 Nov 2005

Anyone with a computer connected to the Internet will be able to watch a live physics "webcast" taking place on December 1 between 11:00 and 23:00 GMT. The marathon event will consist of a series of talks, discussions and other activities being held at physics laboratories and science museums across the globe, from Switzerland to Taiwan and Egypt to Antarctica. Physicists participating in the event will discuss the work of Einstein and other topics in modern physics, including relativity, gravitational waves, antimatter and neutrinos, and will be available for questioning via email.

Among the activities will be a link up with Nobel laureates and other physicists at the 2005 Solvay conference in Brussels; “The late show with Leon Lederman” from Fermilab near Chicago, featuring interviews with young physicists, demonstrations and live music; and discussions about the past and future of the Web from the CERN laboratory in Geneva and Imperial College in London. There will also be a live connection to the Ice Cube neutrino experiment at the South Pole and a videoconference with the VIRGO gravitational wave experiment near Pisa.

The event is being held as part of the 2005 World Year of Physics.
