Pamela Carrillo is a PhD student contributor to Physics World. Pamela is a PhD chemistry student at Stony Brook University, US, whose dissertation is on the development a highly selective and active catalyst for ethanol production from biomass-derived synthetic gas. She is part of the Surface Chemical Dynamics and Catalysis Group led by Michael G White at Brookhaven National Laboratory. She is an animal and nature lover who in her spare time teaches Zumba, dances, bakes and cooks. She sees science as a tool to help climate-change mitigation, and to improve the quality of life for the Earth’s inhabitants.

‘Seeing’ redox orbitals in batteries by Compton scattering

An international team of researchers has developed a new high-resolution x-ray Compton scattering method to visualize the perturbation of redox orbitals in energy-storage materials. The new spectroscopic descriptor would allow the creation of high-performance batteries used in smartphones, laptops and electric cars. The scientists used high-resolution x-ray Compton scattering profiling to image the redox orbitals […]

New technique creates long carbon nanotubes out of thin air

To avoid the worst effects of global warming demands an effective and economically feasible way to decrease the concentration of atmospheric CO2. Researchers in the US have developed a way to remove this greenhouse gas from the atmosphere while simultaneously producing industrial quantities of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The low-energy, facile process, termed “C2CNT”, uses molten […]

Cheap electrocatalysts convert CO2 to CO using solar cells

Researchers in Switzerland and Spain have developed a solar-driven electrolyser that converts CO2 to CO using only Earth-abundant elements in place of precious metals. Reducing emissions of CO2 by converting it electrochemically to CO is an attractive prospect due to the potential use of CO as a precursor to fuels and high-value chemicals. The work leads the way to further exploration […]
