Patrick Sugden

Patrick Sugden is a PhD student contributor to Physics World. Patrick is studying the geochemistry of young lavas in the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, and is a member of the high-temperature geochemistry group at the University of Leeds. His interests include how melting occurs in the mantle where two continents collide, boron isotopes as indicators of fluid movement in the earth’s interior, and radiometric dating of volcanic rocks. He divides his time between field work in the mountains of Armenia; preparing samples for analysis in the lab; and instrument time – making measurements of different elements and their isotopes. Patrick loves walking in wild and mountainous places and can be found hiking around the endless ridges and valleys of the Scottish highlands, or else planning his next trip there.
