Closing the Loop: Optimal Helium Use in Cryogenic Systems
Join the audience for a live webinar at 3 p.m. BST/10 a.m. EDT on 28 August 2025, hosted by Lake Shore Cryotronics
Helium is a finite and irreplaceable resource with applications spanning everything from semiconductor manufacturing and MRI systems to deep-space instrumentation and particle physics. As demand continues to grow, understanding how helium is used – and how it can be better managed – has never been more important.
This webinar, hosted and presented by Lake Shore Cryotronics, will provide a broad overview of helium as a critical industrial and scientific gas, including where it comes from, how much is used globally, and which sectors rely on it most. From there, we’ll dive into helium’s unique role in cryogenics, exploring how it enables extreme low temperatures and examining the types of systems that depend on it.
Special attention will be given to the differences between open-cycle and closed-cycle cryogenic systems, how they operate, where helium losses typically occur, and what opportunities exist to reduce waste, lower costs, and increase system reliability.
Whether you’re managing a lab, designing equipment, or simply seeking to improve your understanding of cryogenic system efficiency, this session will deliver both foundational knowledge and practical insights for smarter helium use.
About the presenter
Rachael Floyd has more than 20 years of experience developing cryogenic products for the worldwide scientific community. She received her BSc (Hons) in physics from the University of Canterbury and her PhD in engineering physics from the University of Wollongong. She did her postdoctoral work at the State University of New York at Buffalo. As Director of Product Management for Cryogenic Systems at Lake Shore Cryotronics, Rachael oversees all product management related to cryostats, cryocoolers, recirculating gas coolers, and other lab cooling products. In addition to working with customers to determine the right solution for their application, she has been involved in specifying products for large scientific research projects.
Who should attend?
