First light for Subaru Telescope

22 Jan 1999

A new 8.3 m telescope has received 'first light' on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The Subaru telescope, run by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), will observe the stars at optical and infrared wavelengths. It is the first large telescope built by the NAOJ outside Japan. The telescope took 8 years to build and will be officially available to researchers early next year.
