Philip Ball is a freelance writer, having previously worked as an editor at Nature. He has a PhD in physics from the University of Bristol, UK. Philip is the author of more than 30 books on science and its interactions with the wider culture, including Critical Mass (which won the Royal Society Aventis Book Prize in 2005) and Beyond Weird (which was voted Physics World’s Book of the Year in 2018). He writes regularly for Nature, Physics World, Chemistry World, the Times Literary Supplement, the Guardian and others, and was awarded the IOP’s Kelvin Medal and Prize in 2019. He has also received the Royal Society’s Wilkins-Bernal-Medawar Medal for contributions to the history, philosophy or social functions of science.
